Lake Taupo
Drift diving is a huge adrenalin rush for reasonably inexperienced divers and more experienced alike. We enter above Cherry Island and are taken by the current about one or two knots along the bottom. We swing in under the bungy jump and scratch around for dropped coins. Rumour has it that one wallet containing about US$50,000.00 was dropped and has not yet been recovered!
There is a huge array of shopping trolleys, car tyres, and other rubbish littering the way. We see quite a range of trout size depending on the temperature. There are less trout if it is colder. After 20 to 40 minutes (depending on current speed) we exit by swimming into a hot stream that empties into the river. This is a great treat, especially on a cold day as the river temperature ranges between 10 and 22 degrees celsius.
