Mikhail Lermontov

Dive Trips >> Mikhail Lermontov

We are loaded and ready to go! Cast off and pray for a smooth crossing. We are on our way to dive the Mikhail Lermontov and maybe some other historic wrecks. Around treacherous Cape Jackson and then in we go to Port Gore. We search for our marks and watch the depth sounder. Once we are anchored over the hull the excitement can be felt. Wait. Lets plan and buddy up. A final check of the map of the ship to get our bearings and over the side we go.

The ship is huge. It is the size of the BNZ tower building on its side. It is too vast to take in and so we look for small landmarks to find our way. Davits, hawsers, port holes, promenade walk, bridge - then down to 30m to see the gashes that sank the Mikhail Lermontov! So small to do so much damage! Now it is time to ascend and play a little on the deck at 18m. Quoits anyone? A resident Octopus wearily watches us, not more pesky divers? Safety stops at 5m and then back on board to rest, regroup, plan and go again.

After the second dive we cruise to the Gem Resort in Bay of Many Coves for a night dive or maybe just a wonderful smorgasbord, a post dive drink or two and then bed. A great day on a huge wreck. We remember those divers who lost their lives there. We played by the rules and are all safe and richer for the experience.

Next morning it is off bright and early to explore again. With each dive the divers gain in confidence. None forget the rules though. Penetration is optional but the pool and engine room are great attractions. Keep to big spaces, stay out of cabins, corridors and stairways - do not penetrate the wreck. The propellers are a great see they seem tiny for such a huge ship. Bottom times are much longer with EANx but the wreck is deep and air is consumed too quickly. Play by the rules and live to dive the wreck another day. After two more carefully planned dives we sail reluctantly back to Wellington. At least the drive is short. Now we present the divers with their PADI Wreck Diver Specialty rating. The days dives are over and we return to Mana. Now we present the divers with their PADI EANx Diver Specialty rating.
