Why?
Gain an understanding of how some U/W scientific studies are performed & an increased awareness of the aquatic environment. Become familiar with the basic procedures & equipment required for these studies. Learn how to:

  • Understand systematic (scientific) diving survey procedures & techniques
  • Identify some common aquatic flora & fauna (algae, finfish & invertebrates)
  • Avoid the potential hazards of Research diving, &
  • Get in contact with Wellington Research Organisations that want your help!

 

What's involved?
Theory of Research diving (sampling), practice on land, 2 supervised open water dives in which to learn & practice your new knowledge & skills, including:

  • How to lay out & use a transect line
  • Use & management of tape measures, quadrats, slates, U/W paper & pencils
  • Various methods of measuring aquatic flora, fauna & topography U/W
  • How to record data U/W, &
  • Practical reasons (& examples) of why you should improve your buoyancy, navigation, air consumption, RDP knowledge & other general diving skills.

 

What do I need to have to start?
You must be at least PADI Junior Open Water Diver qualified or equivalent (just ask us!). Research Diver is a Distinctive Specialty - one we had to author ourselves & get approved by PADI. This means it is not an option on the Advanced O/W course. Very few divers are able to gain this rating!

What's it cost?
$245, including SCUBA cylinder hire & certification as a PADI Research Diver.

Bring along a sense of humour!
